Mahaney and Counter earn first-time wins at the Bowl, Mahoney returns to victory lane

WEST HAVEN, Vt.– Mike Mahaney collected his first 358 modified win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, August 3, after a battle with Joey Scarborough. Leicester’s Derrick Counter also earned a first on Saturday night, winning his first race in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division since moving up from the novice ranks this year. Griff Mahoney also picked up a feature win with the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks, and Bradford Cram earned his second 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic win.

The balance of racing action was slated for Sunday, when the 67-lap CJ Richards Memorial “Prelude to the 200” was set to run, along with a novice feature and the final segments of mini-sprint racing, but a torrential rainstorm after practice resulted in the postponement of that program until Sunday, August 18.

Joey Scarborough and Robert Bublak had the front row for the 30-lap, $1500-to-win feature that saw 16 cars enter. Fifteen took the green as Allan Hammond suffered a problem on the grid and was unable to start the main. Scarborough took off leading, running the bottom with his No. 11 car, and Mahaney quickly began making his way forward from 5th starting spot, cracking the top-two almost immediately. The yellow flag came out early as Bennington’s Jeff Reis tangled with the turn two infield tires. On the restart Troy Audet was moving forward from his 11th starting spot, until a lap 11 caution slowed the field again as Jordan Fornwalt was off the backstretch.

The racing was hot in the top-five behind Scarborough and Mahaney as Siemons, Bublak, Justin Stone and Audet battled for position throughout the race. Scarborough and Mahaney hurdled towards lapped traffic until a lap 20 caution came out for Marty Kelly slow in turn three. On the restart, Mahaney went around the outside of Scarborough, leading the final nine laps en route to the win, his first at Devil’s Bowl. Scarborough was 2nd, achieving a career-best 358 result for himself. Bublak was 3rd with Audet 4th and Siemons 5th.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman feature started with a melee that took out Steve Miller, Scott Towslee and Kyle Kerr. From there, Counter drove smoothly out front from the pole. Gary English and Nick Brundige were both moving forward from the back. William Lussier, Jr. and Bob Kilburn ran side-by-side for a number of laps, battling fiercely for 2nd before Lussier finally cleared him with a few laps remaining. He ate up a full second of time between him and Counter but ran out of time. Counter picked up the win, his first since moving up to the limited sportsman class. Counter has now won features in the mini stock, novice sportsman and limited sportsman divisions at Devil’s Bowl.

Benson’s Griff Mahoney won the Fisher Auto Parts Mini-Stock A-Main over Brian Blake and Adam Stewart. Luke Marcheski and Chris Hewitt led the 21-car starting field to green with Marcheski leading the way early. Mahoney started 17th and was up to the top-10 by lap four. Adam Stewart took the lead from Marcheski for the ninth circuit, charging up from 6th, but Mahoney was coming for another win, bringing Brian Blake and Chris Charbonneau with him from the back. Mahoney led the final five laps to pick up the win. Blake was 2nd with Stewart impressing again in 3rd. Charbonneau was 4th and Richard Fleury had a great run in 5th. Ryan Patch won the B-feature, overcoming his early night struggles. JP Corrow was 2nd and Quinton Bishop was 3rd.

The 9th State Cannabis Crown Vics also ran a feature Saturday night with nine entries. Elisabeth Dupont and Scott Cram led the field to green for the 15-lap affair. The caution came out early as Eric Friend wound up off the racetrack in his No. 4 car. Norman Morrill started 3rd and led from lap two to lap seven, until Cram got by and drove away, winning by more than seven tenths of a second for his second triumph of the year. Morrill was 2nd, turning his season around. Rob Steele was 3rd with Chad Merrill and Dupont 4th and 5th, respectively.

In a tune-up for Sunday, the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds ran time trials for fun, sending the top-six fastest drivers to a dash for cash paying $250 to the winner. Orwell’s Tim LaDuc was quickest on the charts and went on to win the dash over Justin Comes, AJ Munger, Frank Hoard, III, Jimmy Ryan and Brent Warren.

Sunday’s program, including the features for the novice and the final segments of mini-sprint racing will be held Sunday, August 18. Sunday’s wristbands will be honored on that day.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is off on Saturday, August 10 for a summer break! The races will return Saturday, August 17th at 7PM with double features for all divisions and kids rides!
