Devil’s Bowl Speedway Cancels Sunday Dirt Track Race

Track conditions and rainy forecast force decision

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Devil’s Bowl Speedway has cancelled its Dirt Track stock car racing program scheduled for Sunday, June 4. The event was to be the second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race of the 2017 season on the 3/10-mile Dirt Track, and was to be presented by Central Vermont Motorcycles and Whelen Engineering. The Devil’s Bowl facility is suffering the lingering effects of recent heavy rains, compounded by a wet weather forecast for race time on Sunday evening.

Track conditions were rough at the season opening event on May 28 due to prior rain, and more rain fell every day during the week leading up to June 4. Preparation crews worked around the clock from Friday night into Sunday morning, but the grounds have not been able to properly dry out enough to provide a suitable race track.

“We’re going to do it right or we’re not going to do it at all,” Devil’s Bowl Speedway promoter Mike Bruno said. “A lot of equipment was damaged last week because of the track conditions and I will not put the racers through that again. The track is simply not ready, and there’s more rain coming. We’re sorry that we have to cancel this event, but it’s the right thing to do for the fans and the race teams that support us.”

Devil’s Bowl Speedway will attempt to find a makeup date for the special Sportsman Coupe race that was scheduled for Sunday. Also on the card were the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modifieds, the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Super Stocks, and the Portland Glass Mini Stocks, as well as the first-ever race for the new Catamount Mini Sprints. The Thomas Dairy Kids Poster Contest will be rescheduled for a date to be announced.

The inaugural “Rutland County Rumble” invades Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, June 10, with Truck & Tractor Pulls starting at 12:00 noon, followed by a Demolition Derby at approximately 6:00 p.m. General admission for the whole event is just $12.00 for adults and free for kids age 12 and under.

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing returns to the Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, June 11, and to the Asphalt Track on Saturday, June 17.
