Devil’s Bowl, Airborne racers heading to black tie gala on December 12

CHARLOTTE, NC – Four local stock car drivers are headed to Charlotte, NC to be honored at the annual NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards on Friday, December 12. Racers from Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT and Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY will stand on stage at the NASCAR Hall of Fame as they collect track, state, and national honors for their performances in 2014.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) sanctions weekly stock car racing at 58 short tracks across the United States and Canada, including Airborne and Devil’s Bowl. A common point system determines national, state, and provincial champions and award winners. Among the honorees are Division I national champion Anthony Anders of Easley, SC, runner-up Lee Pulliam of Semora, NC, third-place driver Keith Rocco of Wallingford, CT, and champions from all NASCAR tracks across North America.

Todd Stone of Middlebury, VT will be recognized for the second consecutive year as both the NWAAS Vermont State Champion and Devil’s Bowl Speedway track champion after a four-win Modified campaign. Morrisonville, NY driver Jason Durgan will make his first trip to Charlotte as the Vermont State Rookie of the Year after a successful first season in NWAAS Division I Modified competition.

Airborne Modified track champion Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh, NY leads the way for the North Country and will collect the NWAAS National Rookie of the Year presented by Jostens trophy. As a first-year NWAAS Division I license holder, Heywood won five races at Airborne and had a successful limited schedule at Devil’s Bowl, earning enough points to beat Georgia’s Kyle Plott for the national title and fellow Airborne racer Mark Lamberton for the New York State award. Heywood ranked 13th in overall national Division I standings, and his post-season NASCAR winnings total more than $12,000.

Veteran driver Robert Gordon of Milton, VT will be the first driver from the Renegade class honored at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards for his efforts in Division III. A dominant two-track season saw him sweep championships at both Airborne and Devil’s Bowl and earn enough points to finish fifth in Division III national standings and third among all asphalt track drivers.
