Sugar & Spice, Devil’s Bowl Speedway Team Up For Pancake Eating Contest on August 24

Qualifying eat-off on August 18; top three to face off against Devil’s Bowl dignitaries

WEST HAVEN, VT – Gentlemen, start your griddles! Devil’s Bowl Speedway and Sugar & Spice Restaurant are teaming up to host the first pancake and Vermont maple syrup eating contest ever held at a stock car track on Friday, August 24.

In a Vermont-themed upgrade on the annual hot dog eating contest on Coney Island, Sugar & Spice – an authentic sugar house, restaurant, and gift shop located on Route 4 in Mendon, VT near the Pico and Killington ski resorts – will host the preliminary qualifying round on Saturday, August 18 at 9:00am. The contest will pit eager eaters against each other in five-minute showdowns; the three contestants who are able to pack away the most pancakes in five minutes will qualify for the finale.

“Joey Chestnut and Kobayahsi can eat all the hot dogs they want, but they’ve got nothing on our pancake-crazed race fans,” Devil’s Bowl media director Justin St. Louis said. “Anyone can eat 70 hot dogs. This is real food. This is an endless stack of homemade pancakes and real Vermont maple syrup from Sugar & Spice. We’re not messing around here… although it probably will be a little messy.”

Only the first 50 registrants will be eligible to compete in the qualifying round. Competitors may be any age, size, or shape, and can enter at Devil’s Bowl Speedway at ‘Family Fun Friday’ on August 3 or at Sugar & Spice any time through Saturday, August 11. There is no charge to enter, but a $5.00 donation to benefit the annual Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser at Sugar & Spice is encouraged. The three contestants who qualify on August 18 will square off in the championship round against three special guests at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sugar & Spice Night, Friday, August 24. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Sugar & Spice; the runner-up will win a $50 certificate, and third-place will receive a $25 certificate.

The contest will be part of a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program featuring the next-to-last championship event of 2012 for the Bond Auto Parts Modified and J&S Steel Late Model divisions. General admission for the stock car racing and breakfast-destroying spectacular is just $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and free for kids 12 and under. Gates open at 5:00pm, racing begins at 7:30pm.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is in action this Friday, August 3, for “Family Fun Friday” featuring twin 20-lap Modified features, a special 30-lap Bomber race, Late Models, Renegades, and kids’ racecar rides. General admission tickets are $15 for adults and are buy-one-get-one-free. Kids’ rides will be from 6:45pm to 7:15pm, followed by racing at 7:30pm. Pancake contestants may register at the track’s souvenir booth.
