Piper wins headliner, Hutchins back in victory lane with $555 win; Hanson, Austin-Neil, Messier and Steele stop in busy victory lane on Inspired Minds Childcare night

WEST HAVEN, VT.– Under cloudy skies in West Haven, Adam Piper beat the weather and 25 other Sunoco Sportsman Modified drivers to earn his second career victory in the headline division, his first coming in 2023. Marty Hutchins won the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman Feature. Ray Hanson, Nick Austin-Neil, Eric Messier and Rob Steele also made stops in victory lane, adding to their respective win totals for 2024.

James Hanson and Piper led the Sunoco Sportsman Modified field to green for the 30-lap feature with Piper jumping out front early and Hanson trying to track him down. Dave Camara, Josh Masterson and Vince Quenneville were all moving forward, but Quenneville’s night ended in an accident around the lap-10 mark, also sending Tim LaDuc, Marty Kelly and AJ Munger and Bubba McPhee to the pits.

Piper held off challenge after challenge on restarts throughout the race, holding steady all the way, even through a green-white-checkered after Billy Lussier ran into trouble late.

In the end, it was Adam Piper going to victory lane over Josh Masterson, Jimmy Ryan, Hanson and Camara. Randy Ryan, Troy Audet, Josh Leclaire, Frank Hoard, III and Fire Swamp completed the top-10. Randy Ryan earned his first Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger Award, going from 21st to 6th.

Poultney, Vt.’s Marty Hutchins won his first Devil’s Bowl Feature in five years after taking some time off from racing in the last few years. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limiteds ran for 55 laps and a $555 winner’s share. Hutchins started 5th and passed outside-front-row starter Tyler Travis on a lap three restart, never to relinquish it. Like Piper, Hutchins survived a litany of restarts to grab the win over a late-charging Gary English, Mike Clark, Jr., Fred Little and Alex Layn rounding out the top-five.

Nick Austin Neil won his third Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman feature of the year with a lap 14 pass of Russ Farr. Farr started 1st and led convincingly, until a caution around halfway bunched up the field. Austin-Neil passed him exiting turn two on lap 12, but Farr fought back, going outside of Austin-Neil in the south end to retake the top spot. Two laps later, Austin-Neil went by Farr again in turn two, this time for good. Farr was good for 2nd with Allen Hewitt 3rd. Logan Denis was 4th and Matt Wade rebounded from an early incident to finish 5th.

Eric Messier won his 2nd Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock A Main of 2024, after Adam Mahoney and TJ Knight led the field to the green flag. Mahoney led early, but Messier was on the charge forward, along with Chase Allen, Griff Mahoney, Jeremy Brownell and Mark Mahoney. Messier started 19th and was shown as the leader by lap six. Behind him, Allen and Griff Mahoney battled for 2nd with Adam Mahoney, before Allen prevailed and took the spot on lap 11. Messier was three seconds ahead at that point, and he went on to win his 2nd Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock Feature of 2024. Allen was 2nd with Griff Mahoney 3rd, Jeremy Brownell 4th and Adam Mahoney 5th. Anthony Johnson won the B-main.

Ray Hanson impressed again in the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint ranks, dominating his heat race from the back and coming from 11th starting position to win the 15-lap feature. Gage Provencher started behind Hanson in 13th, and they came through the pack as a pair, until Hanson took the lead from Vern Woodard on lap seven, leaving Provencher back in 4th to race with Brandon Emerson, Tucker Jones and Woodard. Provencher secured the runner-up spot on the final lap, with Hanson well out front. Emerson was 3rd, turning in his best run of the year. Jones and Woodard ran 4th and 5th, respectively.

Elisabeth Dupont and Helen Steele led the field to green, but the division’s winningest driver, Rob Steele was on the move quickly from 8th. Eric Friend and Norm Morill were trying to move in the early going to keep Steele’s pace, but they had no luck doing so. Steele launched to the front and led the majority of the race, winning by a margin of almost 2 seconds. Bradford Cram finished 2nd after a charge in the second half of the race. Dupont came across the line in 3rd with Friend and Morrill completing the top five.
