LaDuc wins title in dramatic final feature won by Swamp; Towslee defies odds to win and take championship.

WEST HAVEN, Vt.– Fire Swamp ended the 2024 season at Devil’s Bowl with a win Saturday, locking the gates behind him, closing out his career season the same way it started, checkered flag in hand. Behind him, chaos and disorder abounded for title contenders LaDuc and Quenneville, eventually netting LaDuc his third championship in the last four seasons.

Other 2024 titlists included Scott Towslee (O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited), Logan Denis (Hoosier Racing Tire Novice) Brian Blake (Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock), Gage Provencher (Friend Construction Mini Sprint), and Rob Steele (9th State Cannabis Crown Vic).

Shawn McPhee and Jimmy Ryan had the front row for the 30-lap Sunoco Sportsman Modified Feature on a slick track just after 8PM Saturday. Championship hopefuls Tim LaDuc and Vince Quenneville, Jr, started 19th and 15th, respectively. Quenneville made handicap in his heat race and LaDuc didn’t. Joey Scarborough’s 14th starting spot was the best of any driver with a chance to win it all, but he also was burdened with the biggest deficit, 36 points out coming into the night.

McPhee and Ryan dueled early, following each other around the outside lane while Fire Swamp and Jim Nagle ran behind them. An early yellow for trouble at the back of the pack saw LaDuc sent to the tail for contact, the first twist in a crazy race for the title.

Not many laps later, Nagle spun out in turn one on a restart, resulting in damage to Vince Quenneville’s mount, adding another layer to the drama. Fire Swamp and Randy Ryan used the yellows to ladder forward on the bottom, with Swamp eventually getting around McPhee for the lead.

Quenneville and LaDuc both moved forward, each trying to get ahead of the other for the title. Joey Scarborough was also moving through the field with proficiency.

Near the end, a few restarts set up a great battle between Swamp and McPhee with Swamp eventually taking the upper hand and driving off with the win. Scarborough was 2nd with McPhee 3rd. Justin Comes came up to finish 4th with Marty Kelly, III in 5th. Quenneville finished 6th with LaDuc 8th, giving LaDuc the title by the narrowest of margins, unofficially, two points. Scarborough earned the final Elmo’s Pit Stop $100 hard charger bonus of the season, going from 14th to 2nd.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman put on an incredible show for the race and championship title. Gary English, Jr., of Salisbury, led the points coming into the night with Alex Layn and Scott Towslee having a chance to win the title. English started 11th in the main with Towslee to his outside and Layn back in 18th. William Lussier, Jr. led the early going of the feature from the pole, rolling around the bottom with “Santa” Bob Kilburn pacing him from 10 cars back. Towslee was 4th and Layn was up to 8th with English behind him in 9th, but a lap 15 restart changed everything, and while Towslee rocketed up to the lead, English and Layn struggled to move forward. Towslee assumed control of the lead and the season on lap 18, leading the final seven circuits to collect the win and the championship over English and Layn. Eric Shaw raced up to 2nd with Lussier 3rd, Boomer Patterson 4th and Marty Hutchins completing the top five.

The Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman race and championship were also won by the same driver, Logan Denis, who had virtually sewn up the title when his truck and trailer pulled into the gate Saturday. The youngster from Whiting added some sprinkles on the title cake for good measure, starting 8th and rolling around everyone in the 20-lap feature, leading on lap six, ripping the outside and cruising to the win. Randy Edson was 2nd with Bobbi Hults 3rd, Nick Austin-Neil 4th and Aiden Benoure 5th.

The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint title was won by Gage Provencher. On a night where Quinn Quenneville rocketed to his 5th win of the year including segments, Gage Provencher maximized his heat race points by winning the second qualifier, earning five points to Ray Hanson’s three for placing 3rd in his qualifier, giving Provencher a one-point lead headed into the main event. While Quenneville stole the show with Destin St. Clair in 2nd, Provencher ran 3rd with Hanson 4th, giving the young driver from Bridport the championship by only three points, unofficially, over Hanson.

Cornwall’s Brian Blake became a back-to-back champion in the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks Saturday. Blake entered the night with a 12-point cushion over Benson driver Griff Mahoney, who charged from 17th to 2nd in Saturday’s 15-lap feature. Blake started 15th and made it up to 5th position to secure the title by eight points, unofficially. Orwell’s Jakobee Alger won the feature from 7th starting position, nabbing some redemption after suffering a mechanical failure last week at the front. Jarrod Colburn was 3rd behind Griff Mahoney with Mark Mahoney in 4th and Blake 5th. The B-Feature was won by Quinton Bishop for his first trip to victory lane of the year. Bishop also picked up the drivers’ bike race during intermission.

Bomoseen’s Rob Steele completed his second, dominant year in the 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic division, earning his 13th feature in the class Saturday with a late-race pass on Bristol’s Eric Friend. Steele sold his car following the race Saturday and will be moving up to race in the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman in 2025.  Rookie Brad Cram was 2nd in the standings and finished 3rd on Saturday.

The season-ending, 100-lap enduro was won by Dan Desforges. Desforges began the night with a good draw coming through the gate, putting him out the outside of the front row for the 34-car affair. After a rocky start with multiple stoppages in the first few laps, Desforges sailed away with the win to close out the 2024 season.
