Hults, Provencher, Alger, Allen and Dunnster hit victory lane in front of full house
WEST HAVEN, VT.– Bristol, Vt.’s Josh Masterson won Sunday’s “Firecracker 44” Sunoco Sportsman Modified Feature at Devil’s Bowl over Troy Audet and Marty Kelly. Jason Quenneville won his 2nd O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman Feature of the year over Kyle Kerr and Billy Duprey. Bobbi Hults won the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice main, marking her second-career triumph in the class. Gage Provencher handled the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints while Jakobee Alger and Chase Allen split Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock Glory and Tim Dunster won the enduro. It all happened in front of a nearly standing-room-only crowd before a spectacular fireworks display.
Monkton’s Pat Miner and West Haven’s Johnny Bruno led the 26-car sportsman field to green for the 44-lap Independence Day Special, but the early going was rough. Tim LaDuc brought out the first caution with a spin on the first lap. Pat Miner then ran into trouble in the south end on the restart, halting the race again. Johnny Bruno got out to the lead after that, but 4th starter Brian Whittemore broke a driveshaft on the following lap, bringing out another caution. As that was happening, Bruno hit the turn four wall, ending his day.
With three laps in, the race resumed with Anthony Warren leading the way. Kelly took the lead on the outside of Warren a lap later, while Warren battled with Josh Masterson for 2nd. Masterson began to hound Kelly for the lead shortly after, taking the top spot on lap 17, at which point Josh Leclaire and Bubba McPhee settled into the top-five. Audet started 16th and was making his way forward, jumping into the top-10.
Masterson led Kelly for a series of restarts, choosing the outside lane every time and driving away, until a late restart on lap 34. Kelly retook the lead from Masterson and held it until lap 39, when Masterson passed him back in turns three and four. Audet launched around the extreme outside lane late, passing Kelly for 2nd on lap 40 and giving chase to Masterson, but was unable to make the pass. Masterson scored his first win of the year. Audet was 2nd with Kelly 3rd, McPhee 4th and Travis Green 5th. Green earned the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger, coming from 17th starting position.
In the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman ranks it was Jason Quenneville earning his 2nd win of 2024. Quenneville started 7th and was 3rd by just the fourth lap. Cody O’Brien took the lead from Derrick Counter on the opening circuit and held it until lap six when Quenneville took over. Kyle Kerr, Billy Duprey and Scott Towslee were all charging from mid-pack, with Kerr and Duprey waging war for 2nd position side by side for many laps, but neither could challenge Quenneville, who won by more than one second. Kerr was the runner-up, coming from 14th, Duprey was 3rd. Towslee and O’Brien completed the top-five. Counter held on for 6th.
Bobbi Hults won the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Feature. Russ Farr and Josh Bussino brought the field to the green flag, with Bussino taking the early lead, but Hults started 3rd and she made her way by on lap four. Logan Denis began moving early, starting 9th and going forward. He secured 2nd position just past halfway but could not quite catch up to Hults, settling for 2nd. Bussino wa 3rd with Nick Austin-Neil 4th and Randy Edson 5th.
The Fisher Auto Parts Mini-Stocks ran a pair of split A-mains, each paying $150-to-win and full A-main points. Jakobee Alger won the first main in dramatic fashion, as contact between Chris Charbonneau and leader Brian Blake slowed both drivers with four laps to go, Alger stole the lead. He held on to it, too, even as Blake closed in at the end. Airborne Park regular Chris Clark followed Alger across the line, edging Blake for 2nd. Charbonneau was 4th and Mark Mahoney was 5th.
The second feature was equally exciting, as Griff Mahoney and Chase Allen battled side-by-side all the way around the racetrack. Allen prevailed with a handful of laps remaining, and Mahoney was forced to battle with Jarrod Colburn and Chris Sumner for podium positions as Allen gapped them all. Colburn was 2nd with Sumner 3rd. Mahoney was 4th and Ronnie Alger was 5th.
Gage Provencher won the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint Feature, coming from 12th position. Vern Woodard led the first three laps before being overtaken by Quenneville, who held the lead until Provencher took it on lap 15 and pulled away, winning by four seconds. Quenneville held on to 2nd with Woodard turning in a season-best 3rd place run. Chris Pierce and Chris Lennox completed the top-five.
Tim Dunster won the 50-lap, “wild and crazy” enduro, outlasting Tim LaDuc. The race was stopped on the opening lap for an incident, but elsewise went smoothly.
