WEST HAVEN, V.T. – Brandon, Vt.’s Joey Scarborough won Saturday’s 30-lap Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature at Devil’s Bowl over Troy Audet and Kevin Chaffee, becoming the fourth different winner in six races in 2024.
Pat Miner and AJ Munger led the 27-car field to green with Munger taking the early lead and working the middle and high grooves to hold it until lap 14. Miner gave chase in 2nd position. Scarborough started 9th and worked the bottom groove, making his way to 4th in just three laps.
A series of caution flags slowed the race around halfway, leaving Scarborough and Munger to face off from the front row and settle the final laps. Scarborough won out on the inside lane, cruising to his first win in some time at Devil’s Bowl. He joins Fire Swamp, Vince Quenneville and Tanner Siemons on the list of winners so far in 2024.
Troy Audet and Kevin Chaffee each put together their best runs of the season, in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Tim LaDuc was 4th with Travis Green 5th. Munger wound up just outside the top- five in 6th position, followed by Anthony Warren, Vince Quenneville, Jr., Marty Kelly, III and Justin Comes in the top-10. Points leader Dave Camara was 15th, allowing Laduc to tie him atop the points standings.
Boomer Patterson collected his first win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman ranks, starting on the front row and using the outside lane to drive away with the win. “Santa” Bob Kilburn paced Patterson on the bottom, but the No. 4x car of Patterson’s launch off the top side was too much. Kilburn was eventually passed by runner-up Kamden Duffy. Steve Miller was 4th with Gary English 5th. Alex Layn passed the most cars, coming up nine positions to take 6th. Eric Shaw, Kyle Kerr, Mike Clark and Jason Quenneville completed the top-10.
Salisbury, Vt.’s Aiden Benoure won the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman Feature, his first in the class. He stalked polesitter and early leader Raelin Dunham, who was strong early, but shortly after halfway her car began to drift high in the corners while Benoure continued to run the bottom. He drew even with her on lap 17, and the pair of graduated mini-sprint campaigners went around the track neck and neck, and Benoure cleared her a lap later. She drove into turn three hard on the final lap in an attempt to go around his outside, but the attempt didn’t go. Matt Wade scooted by on the bottom for 2nd, Dunham was 3rd. Logan Denis was 4th, another graduate of the mini-sprint class. Randy Edson was 5th.
Gage Provencher won the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint Feature, the speedy youngster from Bridport started 7th and had the lead by the fifth circuit. Ray Hanson was 2nd with Quinn Quenneville 3rd. Destin St. Clair backed up his good run last week with a 4th place finish this week. John Smith was 5th in his second appearance of 2024.
In Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock Action, Jakobee Alger picked up the win over Brian Blake, each driver utilizing fresh iron, with Alger in his teal Cavalier and Blake in a new-to-the-track Ford Escort. The pair ran side by side on a green-white-checkered finish to close out the race with Blake driving hard on the outside lane and Alger running the bottom. Chris Sumner and Griff Mahoney were just behind them. Alger was strong to Blake’s challenge, collecting his first win of 2024.
Blake held on to 2nd with Sumner and Mahoney 4th and 5th. Peru, N.Y.’s Jeremiah King, a rookie in Airborne Park’s Mini Stock Class, impressed with a 5th place run. Craig Kirby, Ron Alger, Damian Olden, Luke Marcheski and Austin McKirryher rounded out the top-10.
Eric Friend won his second 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic Feature of the year against a 10-car field. Best known for his all-out spectator racing, Friend has transitioned nicely into the Crown Vic car, and he leads the points after three races over Rob Steele. Bradford Cram was 2nd with Steele 3rd. Ron Tollner and Brett Wood completed the top-five.
Eric Messier returned to victory lane for the second time this year following the 50-lap enduro. Messier won a Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock Feature back on May 12. Tim Dunster followed Messier across the line with Jason Porter running 3rd. Trevor Mears and Ryan Castonguay completed the top-five. Thirty-one cars entered.
